How to Improve Prompts for AI Coding Assistants
Give coding assistants the repository context, acceptance criteria, constraints, and verification steps they need.

Include the implementation context
Name the framework, relevant files, runtime assumptions, and existing conventions. A coding assistant cannot reliably infer project rules that are not visible in its context.
- State the requested behavior.
- Identify the files or boundaries it may change.
- Mention tests, linting, and compatibility requirements.
Define acceptance criteria
Describe what must be true when the change is complete. Include edge cases and failure behavior, not just the happy path.
Acceptance criteria
The form rejects an empty value, preserves the existing API shape, shows a useful error, and has a test for each behavior.
Ask for verification
A good implementation prompt asks the assistant to inspect its work, run the relevant checks, and report what it could not verify. Review the diff yourself before merging.
