How to Write Better AI Prompts: A Practical Guide

Learn a repeatable way to turn a rough idea into a clear prompt with context, constraints, examples, and a useful output format.

Start with the outcome

A strong prompt makes the desired outcome explicit. State what you want produced, who it is for, and what a successful answer should help you do.

Avoid relying on the model to infer important details from a short request. Add only the context that changes the answer.

  • Describe the task in one sentence.
  • Name the audience or user.
  • Specify the decision or action the output should support.

Add context and constraints

Context gives the model the facts it should use. Constraints define boundaries such as length, tone, tools, format, or information it must not invent.

Separate instructions from source material with headings or delimiters so the model can distinguish what to do from what to analyze.

Specify the output format

A requested format makes the response easier to review and reuse. Tables, checklists, JSON, outlines, and step-by-step plans are useful when they match the job.

Example

Create a three-column table with: issue, impact, and recommended next step. Use one sentence per cell.

Improve the prompt iteratively

Test the result against the original goal. If the answer is vague, add missing context or a concrete example. If it is too long, tighten the format and length constraints.

AURE can help turn an initial request into a structured draft that you can review and adapt before using it in your preferred AI tool.
